Work Experience

Our students in Year 10 and Year 12 undertake work experience during term-time, for one week

We work with students beforehand alongside Derbyshire County Council who facilitate the process for us, to help them to find a placement. We also encourage students to do additional placements and explore the possibility of part-time work at weekends and during holidays, to boost their CVs.

The dates for each year group are:

Year 10 – Monday 29th June 2020 to Friday 3rd July 2020

Year 12 – Monday 11th May 2020 to Friday 15th May 2020

Why do we do work experience?

There are many reasons for doing work experience, including:

  • To develop and understand employability skills
  • To explore a particular interest through employment
  • To experience the workplace
  • For future references/job application forms
  • Possibility of part-time job opportunities

Finding a work placement

Here are some general tips for finding a work placement:

  • Ask your friends and family if they have any contacts.
  • Think about the kind of work you’d like to do and what you definitely don’t want to do.
  • Use the Derbyshire County Council Database – we will provide you with login information.
  • Remember that you will have to make your own travel arrangements so make sure you find somewhere accessible.
  • Don’t just go for the same placement as your best friend, think about what is best for you.
  • Be prepared to call or email the company/companies you’re interested in.
  • Don’t worry if you’re not successful first time! You might need to ask a few companies before you find the right placement opportunity.

Packs will be given to Year 10 students during their Work Experience Assembly on Wednesday 18th December which will include:

  • Letter to Parents
  • Information/FAQs for parents/carers
  • Work Experience Checklist: for students to use as they work through the process
  • Work Experience Confirmation form: to be completed once an employer has agreed to the placement. This form must be signed by a parent and returned to Mrs Hollingsworth
